Nov. 25 (UPI) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un examined photos of an American aircraft carrier taken by the communist country’s first spy satellite, state media reported Saturday.
According to the Pyongyang Times, Kim examined the photos on Friday during a visit to the control center of North Korea’s National Aerospace Technology Administration.
Kim “learned in detail about the photos of key target areas in the enemy region, including Mokpho, Gunsan, Phyongthaek, Osan and Seoul, as well as various regions in the country,” the report said.
Phyongthaek, Kunsan and Osan all host US military facilities.
The North also claimed to have captured images of the USS Carl Vinson, an American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, using technology from the new spy satellite.
Pyongyang announced on Wednesday that it had launched its first spy satellite. The seemingly successful launch followed two failed attempts to put a satellite into orbit earlier this year.
The satellite, named Malligyong-1, lifted off on a Chollima-1 rocket from a launch site in Tongchang-ri at 10:42 p.m. on Tuesday.
The launch this week sparked sharp condemnation from the United States and South Korea, which responded by withdrawing parts of the 2018 Comprehensive Military Agreement, an inter-Korean agreement designed to de-escalate tensions between the nations.
The North, in turn, announced on Thursday that it would completely withdraw from the agreement and resume “all military measures” in the border area.
