NHL: big surprise in Boston

For the first time in the 2023-2024 season, the Boston Bruins lost a regulation game at home, losing 5-2 to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. Forward Alex DeBrincat was instrumental in spoiling the party at TD Garden.

The former Ottawa Senators took advantage of a poor start from the local favorites and scored his team’s second goal of the first period. With about five minutes left, he stole the puck from freshman Matthew Poitras, escaped on a breakaway and beat goaltender Jeremy Swayman with a wrist shot.

DeBrincat also provided an assist for the game-winning goal in the second period, the work of Robby Fabbri shortly after the penalty was converted. For his part, JT Compher scored the first goal, while captain Dylan Larkin made it 4-2 in the final period. Quebecer David Perron sealed the outcome of the collision by pushing the disc into an abandoned cage.

Ville Husso stopped 25 shots for the Wings, who have scored 23 points in 19 games this year.

Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen threaded the needle for the Bruins, who have a home record of 7-1-1. Swayman made 24 saves. Despite this failure, Boston remains largely at the top of the Atlantic Section with 31 points, six more than the Florida Panthers (before their matchup of the day).
