American technology entrepreneur Elon Musk will meet President Isaac Herzog and relatives of hostages kidnapped in the Gaza Strip during a visit to Israel on Monday. As Herzog’s office announced on Sunday night, the Israeli president wants to emphasize the need to “combat growing anti-Semitism on the Internet” during his conversation with Musk.
The meeting will also be attended by family members of hostages kidnapped by the radical Islamic group Hamas, “who will speak about the horrors of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 and the continued pain and uncertainty for the prisoners,” Herzog’s office said.
Since Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel and the start of the war in Gaza, Musk’s online service In connection with the Gaza war, there has been an increase in misinformation and hateful messages on X.
But Musk personally is also criticized: ten days ago, the White House accused the head of electric car manufacturer Tesla and space company SpaceX of spreading anti-Semitism because of a controversial message on X and harshly criticized the multimillionaire.
Musk had previously agreed with an X user who wrote that “Jewish communities” were fomenting “hatred against white people.” “You told the truth,” Musk wrote. The sentence provoked a storm of indignation.
The background is a right-wing extremist conspiracy theory that Jews pursue a secret plan to bring migrants to Western countries in order to weaken the white majority. A spokesperson for US President Joe Biden said it was “unacceptable” to repeat this “horrible lie”.
