247 According to a report by Valor, the future Argentine Chancellor Diana Mondino stressed on Sunday (26) the relevance of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, while expressing doubts about Argentina’s participation in the BRICS countries. The statements were made during a meeting with Brazilian Chancellor Mauro Vieira, where Mondino delivered an invitation to the inauguration of Presidentelect Javier Milei, scheduled for December 10. This meeting and Mondino’s statements represent a signal for the foreign policy of the future Milei government, particularly with regard to Argentina’s international orientation.
Mondino stressed that Argentina still sees no clear benefits from joining the BRIC countries, an economic bloc that will expand to 11 countries from 2024. Argentina’s reservations about the BRIC countries contrast with its emphasis on strengthening ties with the European Union through Mercosur. The Chancellor indicated that Milei’s government did not want any specific political directions, but rather was committed to multilateralism.
During the press conference, Mondino also addressed the criticism that Milei expressed against Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the election campaign. She distinguished between ideological and personal criticism and reiterated the importance of continuing the partnership between Argentina and Brazil. The Chancellor described the conversation with Vieira as “excellent” and emphasized the need for joint work for the growth of both countries.
