Details about the premise are being kept secret.

A search is currently underway for a co-showrunner to join creator, writer and executive producer Dunnet-Alcocer, who is currently working on the script. The team behind “The Boys: Mexico,” which is filming in the Latin American country, is working on budgets for the new series and has yet to begin casting, sources said.

The Mexico-based spin-off comes from the creative leadership of the other series in The Boys series, mothership developer Eric Kripke and his Kripke Enterprises, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Gray Pictures, Neil H. Moritz’ original film, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Loreli Alba is expected to take over as director of Point Grey.

Based on the New York Times bestselling comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, “The Boys” is an entertaining and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as… Gods – abuse their superpowers instead of using them for good. Intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes, vigilantes The Boys continue their heroic quest to uncover the truth about The Seven and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and hides their dirty secrets. It is the seemingly powerless person compared to the super powerful.

Following the groundbreaking success of The Boys, which is about to enter its fourth season, two spin-off series were released in 2023: the animated series The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which premiered in March, and the College spin-off series “Gen V,” whose first season recently ended and was renewed for season 2.

“The Boys: Mexico” is the latest project from rising star Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote the screenplay for the Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Studios superhero feature “Blue Beetle.” Most recently, he wrote the screenplay for Sony’s El Muerto, directed by Jonás Cuarón. The Querétaro native, Mexico, was also the writer and executive producer of “Miss Bala” in 2019. Additionally, Dunnet-Alcocer is serving as screenwriter for Universal Pictures’ reimagining of “Scarface.”

Luna and García Bernal are veteran actors whose careers exploded after their collaboration in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 Spanish-language hit film “Y Tu Mamá También.” Since then they have reunited several times, including in Rudo y Cursi (2008) and Casa de Mi Padre (2012).

Luna most recently joined the Star Wars universe in the Disney+ TV series Andor, a prequel to Star Wars: Rogue One. Most recently, García Bernal played the role of the titular gay wrestler Saúl Armendáriz in the Amazon biodrama Cassandro.

The long-time friends and collaborators became production partners in 2018 under their banner “La Corriente del Golfo” (The Gulf Stream). Recent projects they have produced include the aforementioned Cassandro and the Luna-hosted series Pan y Circo, both for Amazon.
