NHL brings draft back to All-Star game

The National Hockey League (NHL) has returned to one of its old formulas for its traditional All-Star Game, which will be held in Toronto in February.

The three-day Thursday-Saturday format has been brought back to provide more content for amateurs, the Bettman circuit announced Monday.

The focus of the concept is once again the fan voting, in which twelve of the players who will take part in the All-Star Game are selected. The four most popular will be named captains and have the opportunity to self-select their teammates in the All-Star Draft on Thursday, February 1, 2024. This formula was used for the 2011, 2012 and 2015 editions.

In this televised auction, each team’s leaders are paired with a celebrity. The evening ends with a three-on-three game with the elite of the PWHL, the best women’s hockey circuit in the world.

The All-Star Game Skills Competition takes place the following day and precedes the Saturday games. This weekend, the NHL will also honor the 1967 edition of the Toronto Maple Leafs that last brought the Stanley Cup to the Queen City.
