Montreal police confirmed Tuesday that they had arrested two young men, ages 18 and 23, in the case.

The younger of the two was just 17 at the time of the double murder, which occurred Dec. 15 at a home on Mullins Street near Charlevoix Street.

The first suspect, now 18, was arrested by major crimes investigators in Bordeaux prison, where he was awaiting trial for another double murder in Montreal West that occurred several months earlier.

He is expected to appear before the Juvenile Chamber on Wednesday on two counts of premeditated murder, the most serious in the criminal code.

The second suspect, 23, was arrested in the LaSalle neighborhood of Montreal.

He will appear in the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday, also on a charge of premeditated murder.

The two young men are suspected of the murder of Huguette Maranda Racette (73) and her granddaughter Jade Racette Beaulieu (22). The two women were shot on the night of December 15th.

The grandmother was pronounced dead at the scene, while Jade Racette Beaulieu succumbed to her injuries in hospital a few hours later.

Another double murder

The younger of the two arrested suspects was already behind bars awaiting trial for a double murder committed in Montreal West in the summer of 2022.

On the evening of July 28, 2022, three young men were in a car on Ronald Drive when they were attacked by armed suspects.

The 18-year-old driver died immediately, while his 17-year-old passenger died from his injuries in hospital a few hours later. A third victim was able to escape unharmed.

Two of the three suspects were quickly caught after the crime, but a third managed to escape.

This third suspect was eventually arrested in the Toronto area last March. During his seven months in office, he was also alleged to have been involved in the murders of Huguette Maranda Racette and her granddaughter Jade Racette Beaulieu in Pointe-Saint-Charles County.
