Ridley Scott’s film Napoleon has just hit theaters and the least we can say is that it’s getting a lot of attention. In this case, we have just learned of the rejection of a role by a French actress who inevitably turns out to be… disappointed.

Great resources…

Napoleon was one of the most anticipated films of 2023which marks the return of Ridley Scott to historical films: even if he caused a lot of ink to flow, it was because of his very personal vision of the French emperor, his supposed anachronisms and a global image of the character that fueled many debates.

Be that as it may, the film is a topic of conversation and of course we remember that it is a blockbuster that requires enormous logistical resources. In these we can, for example, count on the presence of hundreds of extras, but also renowned actors and actresses: Of course Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, but also Vanessa Kibrty in the role of Joséphine and a few Frenchmen like Tahar Rahim and Edouard Philipponnat.

Ludivine Sagnier was also supposed to be part of the casting, so she had the unpleasant surprise of being cut from the cut…

…but not enough space

Ludivine Sagnier is a renowned actress on the French scene and has appeared in numerous renowned film productions such as Huit Femmes, Mesrine L’Ennemi Public No. 1 or the Lupine series on Netflix. And that’s why she was supposed to appear in Napoléon, a film in which she played a supporting role!

Unfortunately, Ridley Scott didn’t keep any of his scenes in the final cut and thus simply deleted his character. A difficult decision for the actress, but one who was warned directly by the director. In an interview with Le Parisien, she confides about this decision:

I am not suprised. It was still a small role, eight days of filming in total, and I could see that Ridley Scott had filmed a lot of things. “We told ourselves on set that in the end there would be enough for a series,” she admits. He had to cut two hours of film, the price was paid by the supporting characters, like mine.

If you are curious about what role Ludivine Sagnier played, It was that of Thérésa Cabarrus, a Spanish woman who became Madame Tallien during the Revolution and was influential in the overthrow of Robespierre.
