Pope Francis is stable and does not have a fever, but pneumonia associated with breathing difficulties remains, a Vatican statement said on Wednesday (29).
According to Portal witnesses, Francis, 86, appeared breathless and said little during his weekly audience at the Vatican.
The Pope continues to undergo antibiotic treatment to cure the infection.
Pope previously had lung problems
In 2013, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had part of a lung removed when he was young due to a respiratory illness.
“Jorge Mario Bergoglio [nome do atual pontífice] He had three terrible days, he was between life and death when he was 21 years old. He had a high fever, he hugged his mother and said: “What is happening to me?” “The doctors were confused and didn’t know how to answer,” described the journalist Francesca Ambrogetti in her book “El Jesuíta” (“The Jesuit “) the condition of the young future Pope Francis.
“The diagnosis suggested severe pneumonia and that he had three cysts in his lungs. The disease was brought under control and after a while Bergoglio underwent an operation to remove the upper part of his right lung,” explained the journalist in the third chapter of Constructions. “
In June 2023, the Vatican reported that Francis underwent a threehour abdominal operation under general anesthesia and there were no complications.
Since 2022, Francisco has had a personal health assistant, a nurse, who accompanies him permanently. The Pope has been in a wheelchair since May last year due to pain in his right knee.
Last year, 2021, the Pope spent ten days in Gemelli Hospital for colon surgery. The pope later explained that the surgery had left him with aftereffects and that he had decided to rule out knee surgery.
It was already known that he suffers from chronic sciatica, which causes him to limp, which has forced him to miss official ceremonies on several occasions.
In a recent interview with Argentine doctor and journalist Nelson Castro, the pope explained that in Argentina he treated back pain with Chinese acupuncture, that he suffered from gallstones, and that in 2004 he had temporary heart problems due to a slight narrowing of an artery .
