A 70-year-old Ugandan woman gave birth to a boy and a girl after fertility treatment. This makes her the oldest mother in Africa.
A 70-year-old woman gave birth to twins in Uganda. Safina Namukwaya is Africa’s oldest mother, doctor Edward Tamale Sali, who cared for Namukwaya during her pregnancy and birth, said on Thursday. The babies – a boy and a girl – were born at a clinic in the capital Kampala, where Namukwaya underwent fertility treatment. Mother and children are fine.
“I don’t know how to express my joy at this moment,” Namukwaya, who lives in rural Masaka, about 120 kilometers west of Kampala, said by phone. At her age, she was no longer expected to “get pregnant and give birth to a child or take care of a baby,” she said. The twins are, therefore, a “miracle” for her. Her doctor spoke of an “extraordinary performance”.
Namukwaya said she gave birth to a girl in 2020 – after previously being unable to have children and being vilified as a “cursed woman”. (APA/AFP)
