Pope Francis announced this Thursday the 30th that he had been diagnosed with acute infectious bronchitis and asked everyone for support through prayers. The religious leader explained that the illness prevented him from traveling to COP28 in Dubai this weekend on medical advice.
The 87yearold pope has struggled with a series of health problems in recent years, including hospitalizations, most recently in June. However, despite his bronchitis, he continues to work and meet with the authorities.
During an audience in Rome with participants at a seminar on health and ethics, the pope expressed gratitude for his survival and explained the reasons why he was unable to attend COP28. According to him, his doctor recommended avoiding the high temperatures and sudden temperature changes in Dubai caused by the air conditioning as these could aggravate his bronchitis condition.
Although he does not have a fever, the holy father is taking antibiotics, the Vatican said in a statement on Wednesday 29. At another audience with theologians, the Pope again asked for the prayers of the faithful and emphasized the difficulty of the work he is doing as head of the Catholic Church.
COP28 began this Thursday and the Pope was due to arrive in Dubai tomorrow to give a speech and attend bilateral meetings, returning on Sunday 3rd.
