Israel announced that it is resuming hostilities against Hamas this Friday (1) after the terrorist group violated the ceasefire agreement. In the early hours of the morning, a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip was intercepted by Israeli forces.
The launch of the missile against Israel came shortly before the expiry of the agreement to suspend the conflict, scheduled for this Friday at 7 a.m. local time (2 a.m. in Brasília).
In addition, attack warning sirens were activated in Israeli communities near the enclave.
“Hamas violated the pause in operations and also fired into Israeli territory. The Israeli armed forces have resumed the fight against the terrorist organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli military said.
The Palestinian press reported the sounds of explosions and gunfire in northern Gaza just minutes before the end of the ceasefire. Israel then announced that it would carry out airstrikes against Hamas targets in Palestinian territory.
The temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas lasted seven days and was marked by the exchange of Hamas hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
In addition, the Gaza Strip received trucks carrying humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians during the pause.
The ceasefire began on November 24 and was extended twice. The latest extension of the agreement came on Thursday (30), when Hamas committed to releasing more hostages, while Israel announced the release of more Palestinian prisoners.
According to the United Nations, more than 80 hostages captured by Hamas on October 7 were released during the lull in the ceasefire.
The Wall Street Journal newspaper, citing Egyptian authorities, even published a report saying that a new agreement had been reached to extend the pause for another day. However, Israel and Hamas have not announced any new extensions.
