Safina Namukwaya, a resident of rural Masaka, about 120 kilometers west of the capital, gave birth to a boy and a girl on Wednesday. A true “miracle” for the septuagenarian.
A 70-year-old woman from Uganda gave birth to twins, “an extraordinary achievement,” her doctor told AFP on Thursday November 30.
“For a 70-year-old mother to give birth to twins is an extraordinary achievement,” said doctor Edward Tamale Sali, who oversaw her pregnancy and delivery.
“A wonder”
The mother, Safina Namukwaya, described the birth of the twins, a boy and a girl, as a “miracle” on Wednesday.
The mother and babies are in good health and continue to be monitored at a facility in the capital Kampala, continued Edward Tamale Sali. Safina Namukwaya normally lives in rural Masaka, about 120 kilometers west of the capital.
The septuagenarian gave birth to a daughter just three years ago after being described as a “cursed woman” for failing to have a child before.
She had no children with her first husband, who died in 1992. However, much to her dismay, Safina Namukwaya’s current partner, whom she met in 1996, did not give birth.
“Maybe he’s not happy that I gave birth to twins… fearing the responsibility that comes with it,” she said.
