“Berlin”, the end of “The Crown” and other series recommended for December 2023

The platforms and chains went bankrupt in the last month of the year. The strikes that have kept Hollywood at a halfway point (or a complete standstill) for half a year are taking their toll on the lack of new content. As an example of this, the selection we present today only includes European titles. The premiere of the prequel to Money Heist, which focuses on the past of one of the most powerful characters of the original gang of thieves, is notable for the expectations it raises. The end of the fictional story of Elizabeth II also takes place with the final episodes of The Crown. A sharp look at the rise of the far right and Norwegian political satire are also featured this month.

Additionally, the dramatic thriller “The Couple Next Door” (Day 4 on Movistar Plus+) places “Outlander” protagonist Sam Heughan at a crossroads between neighbors in a luxurious residential neighborhood. Kim Kardashian is the star attraction of American Horror Story: Delicate Season 12 (Day 6 on Disney+), whose central theme is motherhood. The ’80s comedy “Courthouse” (13th on WarnerTV) returns with a young woman who runs the craziest courthouse in Manhattan. And one of Amazon Prime Video’s biggest ratings hits, Reacher, returns (for its 15th) with a second season that will confront the protagonist with new secrets and betrayals.

More information

The Spanish film Todos mienten (Day 14 on Movistar Plus+) further complicates the atmosphere in its seemingly perfect community with the appearance of a corpse. The Simpsons (20th on Disney+) enters its 35th season and the stories of a 12-year-old demigod become flesh and blood in Percy Jackson and the Olympians (20th on Disney+), a proposal that should attract the whole family Screen.

Of this month’s premieres and returns (which you can check out on our calendar), we recommend giving this selection a chance.

The walk-in

Stephen Graham as Matthew Collins in the first episode of The Walk-In.

The series, which premiered on the British channel ITV in 2022, addresses one of the most relevant social and political phenomena of recent years, the rise of the extreme right. The always remarkable Stephen Graham plays repentant neo-Nazi Matthew Collins, who has infiltrated one of the most dangerous far-right groups in the UK. Several real-life events fuel this harsh drama, such as the attack with a machete and hammer on a dentist who shouted “white power” in 2015 or the murder of MP Jo Cox in 2016 by a man associated with the neo-Nazi group in The connection is National Alliance.

When and where can you see it? The premiere takes place on Tuesday 5th on Filmin.

The Farads

Pedro Casablanc, in a picture from “Los Farad”.

It’s the eighties. A young aerobics instructor begins a relationship with Sara Farad after she defends her from an attacker. This is how Oskar meets the Farad family, who are dedicated to the arms trade and make his dream of opening their own fitness studio come true. For this purpose, Oskar moves to Marbella and becomes another member of the Farads, through which he gets to know the Marbella jet set and current geopolitics and who it is good to do business with and who it is better not to do business with. Miguel Herrán, Susana Abaitua and Pedro Casablanc star in the series by Mariano Barroso and Alejandro Hernández, which combines thriller with family drama.

When and where can you see it? The eight chapters will be available on Amazon Prime Video on the 12th.

I’m Ruth

Kate Winslet and Mia Threapleton in I Am Ruth.

Created by Dominic Savage, each season features stories of women struggling with adversity. The third season is reduced to a single 90-minute episode starring Kate Winslet and her real-life daughter Mia Threapleton, which won two Bafta awards, one for Best Drama and one for Best Actress for Kate Winslet. She plays a middle-class single mother with two children. One of them is Freya, a 17-year-old girl who has developed a destructive addiction to social media. Her mother will do anything to help her. Savage and Winslet co-authored the chapter with the intent of telling a story about the importance of mental health in young people.

When and where can you see it? December 12th at 10pm on COSMO.

The crown

It was on this list last month and this month too. Because now comes the end of the series that fictionally treated the reign of Elizabeth II. You could say it’s coming at a low ebb after the disappointing first four episodes, but the Queen needs to be fired like she deserves. There are six chapters left and the 21st century is dawning. Guillermo arrives in Eaton after his mother’s death, where he will meet Kate Middleton. The monarchy is struggling with its image crisis in public opinion. And Carlos and Camila’s wedding is coming.

When and where can you see it? The final six episodes premiere on Netflix on Thursday the 14th.

Dressed in blue

Two years after La Veneno’s death, Valeria finds in her house the VHS of the documentary Vestida de azul, which tells the experiences of six transsexuals in Spain in the early 1980s. Based on these experiences, Valeria decides to write a book to give a voice to those who do not deserve to be forgotten. Part of the Veneno artistic team returns to what is sold as a spiritual sequel, maintaining a similar narrative halfway between the present and the past. The series had at least one transgender person on each working team and the Javis as producers, although they left the writing and directing to other teams.

Power play

Kathrine Thorborg Johansen and Jan Gunnar Røise in the series “Power Play”.

In the late 1970s, the young abortion doctor Gro Harlem Brundtland becomes Minister of the Environment. When the government around her begins to crumble, she becomes the first woman to become Prime Minister of Norway. It was in 1981 and only for a few months. She then returned to this position in 1986 and 1990. This political satire, which won the Best Series award at CanneSeries and combines reality, fiction and a lot of humor, is inspired by the first term of a woman committed to abortion and ecology, surrounded by men who are not very competent or not caring about the common good.

When and where can you see it? The premiere of the six episodes will take place on the 19th on Filmin.

Berlin

Pedro Alonso as Berlin in the first episode of the series.

Years before Berlin joined his brother’s plan to make nonstop money at the National Coin and Stamp Factory, he had already been at the forefront of other legendary robberies. For one of them he travels to Paris with a small gang of thieves of different specializations. The goal is to make jewels worth 44 million disappear from an auction house’s vault. But Berlin didn’t expect that love would come into the middle of his plan and turn everything upside down. In addition to the iconic character from La casa de papel, agents Raquel Murillo (Itziar Ituño) and Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri) return for this spin-off/prequel. And in the new band, among others, Michelle Jenner, Tristán Ulloa and Begoña Vargas.

When and where can you see it? On Friday the 29th, all eight episodes will premiere on Netflix.

The Winter King

1701496593 222 Berlin the end of The Crown and other series recommendedIain De Caestecker, star of “The Winter King”.

The myth of King Arthur in the style of “Vikings” or “The House of the Dragon” (Save the distance). The story dates back to the 5th century, when Britain was divided into several conflicting territories. King Uther Pendragon tries to unite the various factions to fight against the Saxons. His hopes lie with his heir, Prince Mordred, but Merlin’s omens suggest that the child could ruin the kingdom. Then Merlin challenges the monarch and sets out to find Arthur, his illegitimate son, the only one capable of uniting the tribes under his command against the Saxons. Critics have highlighted the production, cast and locations more than the script.
