Mayor’s Ball: Record $800,000 raised for youth mental health

The Mayor’s Ball, Quebec’s most glamorous event of the year, raised a record $800,000 for the Fondation jeunesse en tête to prevent psychological distress among young people aged 11 to 18.

The 12th edition of the Nobel Evening should have succeeded in significantly exceeding the organizers’ goal of 675,000 US dollars. The chairman of the Fondation Jeunes en Tête and head of customer relations at the National Bank, Éric Bujold, said he was “delighted to see that so much money could be used to help young people who need it.”

Last year the Mayor’s Ball raised $650,000.

“A young person who drops out of their studies, falls behind or is not doing well mentally is not only very serious in itself, but also causes enormous costs for the economy and society,” emphasizes the honorary president of the 12th Ball of Mayors and Presidents CEO of Desjardins Group, Guy Cormier.

The evening, co-hosted by Stéphane Bellavance and Marième, brought together a large part of the business community from the Quebec region.

“It’s important to talk about it”

The event’s sponsor, Quebec Mayor Bruno Marchand, said he was pleased that business people in the city and surrounding areas care about youth mental health.

“It’s important to talk about it. It is a topic that is sometimes still taboo. Tonight we tell the world that it doesn’t matter if your life falters, if you put one knee on the ground, or if you doubt. We want to raise awareness that there are people who will help when help is needed,” he argues.

Indispensable help

Alycia Domaty and Miguel Angel Ibarra Torres are two young student-athletes from Quebec who received help from the Fondation Jeunes en tête as part of the pre-medal diploma program.

The two young people, aged 16 and 17 respectively, agree that the support they receive is vital to their success.

“My tutor [offert grâce à la fondation, NDLR] Really helps me in school. My grades have really improved since I got this help. I want to get into social work technology at CEGEP and this brings me closer to my goal,” explains the young girl who is currently finishing high school.

For his part, the young Ibarra Torres claims that the help of the Youth in Mind Foundation should allow him to enter police technology “if everything goes well”.
