Mourning in the Caribbean over the death of Carissa Etienne

Roseau, December 2 (Prensa Latina) The governments, dignitaries and institutions of the Caribbean today mourn with great sadness the death of Carissa Etienne, while highlighting her career as a doctor and her contributions while she led the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The Caribbean Health Authority emphasized that the expert has contributed to the transformation of health systems across the continent and, with her commitment, has particularly promoted the development of projects to improve the quality of life and healthier habits among the population of her region.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosvelt Skerrit, in a detailed statement expressed his condolences on the death of a compatriot with high recognition inside and outside the country, who filled her homeland with pride and advocated for universal security of supplies for the residents of the island. “We will always remember them and celebrate their significant contributions, their commitment to the management of public health in Dominica, their leadership and strategic leadership for the health systems in the Americas,” the President concluded.

Likewise, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, described Etienne as a dear friend of this territory who provided necessary leadership and support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He assured that “his commitment and compassion for the people of our Caribbean community (Caricom) will never be forgotten.”

For the British Virgin Islands, the late professional was a “visionary and pioneer” with a career worthy of emulation, who left an indelible mark on the healthcare sector both regionally and globally.

Other governments, organizations and personalities from the Caribbean and Latin America also expressed their condolences to the family and friends of Carissa Etienne, while the press media of Caricom member states praised her imprint and published biographical sketches about her life and work.

The respected intellectual died yesterday at the age of 71 in a hospital in the United States, shortly after collapsing at home and requiring resuscitation.

He held several positions in his native Dominica before leading companies in the Caribbean, the Americas and at the World Health Organization.
