Things are heating up again on “House of the Dragon” as HBO has released a trailer for the second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel series.
Season 2 promises even more dragon war, as the forces of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower face off – well, dragon against dragon. The trailer shows Daemon Targaryen in his impressive armor, knights on horseback, soldiers burning alive, and some of the main cast riding their dragons into battle.
“No war is so hated by the gods as a war between relatives,” says Rhaenyra. But also: “And no war is as bloody as the war between dragons,” she reminds her aunt Rhaenys Targaryen.
The main cast of House of the Dragon returns, along with several new faces. The new main cast includes Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne.
The returning cast includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham. Previously announced new additions include Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower and Simon Russell Beale as Ser Simon Strong.
In early November, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that the fantasy drama series’ second season would premiere in “early summer” 2024.
House of the Dragon, an adaptation of George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood, is set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones (and approximately 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen) at the height of the Targaryen Empire Dynasty. Season 1 revisited the political unrest that Game of Thrones was known for after Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) was named the chosen heir to King Viserys I (Patty Considine). Rhaenyra is later crowned queen and marries her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith). Rhaenyra and Daemon find themselves in a power struggle against Rhaenyra’s half-brother King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), which brings Westeros to the brink of civil war.
In its debut, the first season of House of the Dragon attracted nearly 10 million viewers, marking HBO’s largest series premiere in history. Shortly afterwards it received an early extension.
