Most fans don’t cope well with hangovers anymore, but Cansei de Ser Sexy’s show at the Primavera Sound 2023 festival this Saturday (2) had a certain atmosphere of wild youth.

The Brazilian group became an icon of an alternative generation of the early 2000s by mixing rock with electronic music and singing about the glamorous everyday life of young uppermiddle class people of the time.

Founded in 2003 in the darkest nighttime districts of São Paulo, CSS grew with the help of the outdated Fotolog, throwing larger parties and gaining international resonance. The song “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” from the 2005 debut album of the same name entered the most important US music charts in 2007.

The band’s importance abroad made it the biggest success story in Brazilian rock after the turn of the millennium.

CSS currently consists of Lovefoxxx, Ana Rezende, Luiza Sá and Carolina Parra producer and founder Adriano Cintra left the group in 2011. Since part of the group lives outside of Brazil, the members only meet occasionally for big performances. The previous reunion took place in 2019 at the Popload festival, also in São Paulo.

As was the case this year, the band reveled in nostalgia on the Primavera Sound stage from the first sound the sound of the dialup internet connection, familiar to anyone who lived through CSS’s heyday.

The repertoire included early childhood hymns such as “Alala” and “Bezzi”. But the audience was surprised by the absence of “Meeting Paris Hilton”, the soundtrack of a reality show starring the American socialite herself, and the hit “Superafim”, which was even played in “Big Brother”.

The setlist devoted too much time to the 2011 album “La Liberacion,” when CSS was no longer as hyped. Songs like “I Love You,” “Hits Me Like a Rock,” and “Fuck Everything” weren’t very exciting.

“City Grrrl” was an emotional moment in which Lovefoxxx opened up about a recent crisis in his personal life. “I got out of a hole. It’s great to start over again. Thank you for being tender, strange people,” she said (Watch the full speech in the video below).

Cansei de Ser Sexy singer speaks to the audience at Primavera Sound

The singer delivers a performance: she dances, rolls on the floor, changes clothes in front of everyone and talks to the audience, not as if she were not at a festival, but in one of the clubs where CSS was born.

“They were very lucky because everyone here is in the ovulation phase. “If it had been any other time, the show wouldn’t have been as good,” he joked.

Of course, unlike other bands that sound forced as they try to recreate the spontaneity of the past, Cansei de Ser Sexy maintain their unpretentious spirit even 20 years later. It’s beautiful to see.

The members are not ashamed to say that technique was never the band’s strong suit some started music without knowing how to play instruments properly. But what he lacks in formal rigor, he makes up for in style, charisma and energy.
