NFL won’t penalize Giants linebacker after violent hit on Patriots’ Demario Douglas – NESN

The hit put Douglas in the concussion protocol

Several New England Patriots players lobbied the NFL to take action against New York Giants special teams player Cam Brown after his hit sent Demario Douglas into the concussion protocol.

But those members of the Patriots didn’t get what they wanted on Saturday, as the NFL didn’t issue a fine for Brown Douglas’ clothesline on a punt return early in the fourth quarter during last Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium. Brown was not tagged in the game.

“It’s just crazy,” Peppers said after the game. “They preach all these player safety issues but it goes unnoticed. But I was penalized maybe two or three times for clean hits. So that upset me too. They even looked up at the Jumbotron and there was still no flag.

“But you can’t say anything about the referees in this league. It is what it is. To me that’s a joke. You can’t say you care about player safety and not mark the game.”

The high hit had further consequences for Douglas, who did not practice at all this week and has already been ruled out for New England’s Week 13 game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium.

Although Brown passed without a penalty, two other Giants took heat for their actions in the game against the Patriots. Linebacker Carter Coughlin was fined $5,764 for unnecessary roughness and safety. Xavier McKinney was fined a hefty $13,659 for unsportsmanlike conduct after Chad Ryland’s game-winning field goal attempt went wide in the final seconds.

However, the Patriots must now put that behind them as they look to end a four-game losing streak against the Chargers. Sunday’s kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
