COP28: Luisa Neubauer calls for a complete exit from fossil energy in Dubai zeit.de

Representatives of the climate protection movement Fridays for Future expressed their disappointment with the state of global climate protection efforts and called on participants at the current world climate conference in Dubai to take significantly stricter measures. Above all, a complete exit from climate-damaging energy sources coal, oil and gas must be decided at COP28, demanded German activist Luisa Neubauer during a protest on the conference grounds.

Neubauer strongly criticized statements made by conference president Sultan al-Jaber. “When important people cast doubt on the scientific consensus, the entire negotiation process is ridiculed. We are here to protect the dignity and integrity of this conference,” she said. Unfortunately, we still need to point to the simplest results of climate research that have been available for decades. “Every school-aged child can understand this. It’s ridiculous. And we’re angry about it.”

The COP president is said to have doubted the scientific consensus

As UAE Minister of Industry, Al-Jaber is the official host of COP28. At the same time, he heads the state oil company. There was, therefore, criticism of Al-Jaber’s role even before the conference began.

Over the weekend, the Guardian and the Center for Climate Reporting reported that Al-Jaber questioned the scientific findings in a video call with UN representatives in November. Thus, the minister said that “there is no science” that proves that the progressive elimination of fossil fuels is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial times.

Fridays for Future activist Clara Duvigneau also accused “leaders of the global north” of not doing enough to combat the climate crisis. “Real action means: All coal, gas and oil projects must be stopped – no loopholes,” she said. “We are angry and disappointed. We are tired of all your empty promises.”

The two-week conference involving nearly 200 countries and around 97,000 participants is scheduled to end on December 12. The question of a possible decision to phase out coal, oil and gas is one of the central controversial issues at the summit.
