PHILADELPHIA – Brock Purdy admitted Sunday night that he has been thinking about what happened in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
“It was kind of in my head that I got hurt here,” the quarterback said after the 49ers’ 42-19 victory over the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. “That was this year, at the end of January, but was it going to be the revenge game or something like that? NO.”
Purdy suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm, which required significant offseason surgery. He was injured on the sixth play of the game. And when he was forced back onto the field in the third quarter after backup quarterback Josh Johnsons suffered a concussion, Purdy couldn’t throw.
Purdy said the most important thing for him and the 49ers on Sunday isn’t the past.
“It was Week 13 for me,” Purdy said. “We are entering a new year. It’s a hostile environment. We needed this game. We need this game and obviously we have some really important games coming up, so I was okay with that.”
Purdy said he didn’t want to be distracted by what could have been from last season. His focus is on doing his best for the 49ers this season.
“It’s 2023 and that’s where my thoughts were,” he said.
Purdy had a great game, completing 19 of 27 pass attempts for 314 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.
With his performance, Purdy now has an NFL-best passer rating of 116.1 with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.
But things didn’t go well for the 49ers on Sunday. The 49ers had negative yardage and no first downs on their first two possessions of the game.
“Nobody freaked out or anything,” Purdy said.
Once the 49ers got going, coach Kyle Shanahan’s commitment was unstoppable. The 49ers scored on consecutive touchdown drives of 85, 90, 75, 77, 75 and 47 yards.
“Especially for myself as a quarterback, I just had to see myself complete a ball, get a completion, get things rolling, and we did that,” Purdy said. “Kyle called a few plays so we could get the ball out of my hands pretty quickly and get into a rhythm.
“Once we accomplished that, we moved on from there and never looked back.”
