Nothing about flexibility in the counteroffer: a damaging statement from Quebec, according to FAE –

A statement from Sonia LeBel’s office on Monday morning has affected the negotiating climate, according to the president of the Autonomous Education Federation (FAE), whose members are continuing their indefinite general strike.

“We have to take our time at the tables and today, in my opinion, this interference is harmful to what is happening at our negotiating tables,” explained the president of the FAE, Mélanie Hubert, a few minutes before the start of a demonstration that took place in front of the office of Prime Minister François Legault must end in Montreal.

Earlier, the Office of the President of the Ministry of Finance sent a statement to the Journal in which Quebec lamented the lack of progress on flexibility in the FAE’s counteroffer last Saturday.

“Unfortunately, the union stands by its positions and has not included anything in its counteroffer regarding flexibility,” Ms. LeBel’s office wrote.

Quebec is calling for all class assignments to be completed starting in June rather than at the start of the school year in September.

For its part, Ms. Lebel’s team emphasized that it had made “important openings” on “several priority issues for the union, such as professional autonomy and class composition.”

A difficult agreement

The FAE recognizes that progress has been made in class composition, but wants to ensure that corrections are systematically made when a group includes too many students with difficulties or special needs.

For Mélanie Hubert, the Quebec statement shows that the unlimited general strike affecting 40% of schools is likely to continue this week.

“Given this morning’s statement, we can imagine that it will indeed be difficult to reach an agreement soon,” she said.
