In the coming months leading up to the end of the year, alongside the launch of at least 2 or 3 more Marvel series, we’ll have Thor: Love and Thunder launch in July and Black Panther: Wakanda forever premiering in November.
The longawaited Black Panther sequel will be responsible for introducing one of the most important and classic Marvel characters in the comics to the MCU: the submarine king Namor, the world’s first mutant.
But Namor’s first appearance in the Marvel films came almost earlier than expected, in Doctor Strange 2, in the Illuminati scene, at least revealed Michael Waldron, the film’s screenwriter, in a recent interview with Variety.
According to him, Marvel stopped using the character in Doctor Strange 2 because the studio already had future plans for him:
“[Nós] We spoke about him because he is certainly an original member of the Illuminati. But I think Marvel has other plans for him in the MCU. And that’s not how he came through in this particular film.”
Waldron also commented on how the Illuminati came onto the scene, explaining how he and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige exchange ideas about who they wanted in the group:
“It’s a combination of us saying, ‘Well, what if we did that?’ But Kevin’s just as excited about these things as we are, so sometimes these ideas come from Kevin and he’s like, ‘Well, what if we have this and that? I will do it! I’m calling!’ So he’s just as excited about all of these things as any of us. It’s a great team effort for Nerds to see what we can put together for this team.”
The screenwriter also reveals that Scarlet Witch’s plans to kill (almost) all Illuminati were also in sight from the start:
“Yes, that was in my first draft of the script. That was really the madness of the multiverse for me. They introduced this team of superheroes that the audience finally feels safe with, and then they get gutted by Scarlet Witch. It was a great way to pull the audience down. And that’s why I hope you spend the rest of the film terrified of Wanda and what she’s capable of.”
