Gil Brother battled prostate and bladder cancer and suffered the aftereffects of a stroke six months ago. William Passos, Away’s nephew, confirmed his uncle’s death on social media. “The news is not good. Our dear Away has passed away. He passed away at 10pm yesterday (Sunday) but they managed to speak to us this morning. (…) Our Away has moved to his heavenly father.”
Six months ago, Willian was called by neighbors from Away in Petrópolis, in the Serrana region, because his uncle seemed disoriented. The nephew went to his house and found him lying down. After a long hospital stay, Gil began living with his nephew in Magé. But 20 days later, the comedian was hospitalized again after suffering from severe pneumonia.
Away was hospitalized for the third time in a month due to the discovery of prostate and bladder cancer. Willian even started an online fundraiser to help pay for his uncle’s healthcare.
Away became known nationally for his participation in the group Hermes and Renato on MTV Brasil in the late 1990s, where he remained for six years. Over the course of his career, he took part in several parts of the program, playing various characters, from a chef to a drug dealer to a law professor. All interpretations always had the same character trait: the dissolute and explosive personality, always full of swear words.
