The wedding took place six months after the death of her late friend and fellow actor John Cazale in March 1978 from complications of a lung cancer diagnosis.

A year after his death, the Mamma Mia! The star reflected on the loss, telling People at the time: “Death is still very much with me.” It forced me to confront my own mortality, and once you do that, you see things differently. “

After his death, the actress had to move out of the apartment she shared with Cazale and received help from her brother and one of his friends – who happened to be Gummer.

Meryl and Don grew closer and he let Meryl sublet his apartment in New York City when he wasn’t in the Big Apple. The couple began exchanging letters and the friendship soon turned into something more serious.

In 2002, the star opened up about her relationship with the artist, telling Vogue that the secret to their long-lasting marriage was “goodwill and a willingness to bend — and keep your mouth shut every now and then.”

She further explained: “There is no plan on how to start a family: it is always a huge negotiation.”

“But I have a holistic need to work and have great romantic relationships in my life. I can’t imagine avoiding one for the other.”
