American woman killed by shark while paddling in Bahamas

A 44-year-old American woman was killed by a shark in the Bahamas on Monday while paddling off a resort beach, Bahamas police said in a statement.

“The victim was SUP paddling in the company of a man off the coast of a resort west of (the island of) New Providence when he was bitten by a shark,” the release said.

A sea rescuer from the hotel center brought the woman and man in question back to shore before administering first aid, the same source said.

An investigation has been launched, police said.

Tourism is central to the economy of the Bahamas, an archipelago of more than 3,000 islands that is home to numerous beach hotel complexes.

According to the International Shark Attack File, a database maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History, USA, 33 unprovoked shark attacks have been recorded in the Bahamas since 1580.

According to the same database, 89 shark bites were recorded worldwide last year.

In 2019, an American woman visiting the country was also killed by a shark while diving with her family.
