Sao Paulo
The writer and biographer Ruy Castro won the Jabuti Prize for best literary novel for “Os Perigos do Imperador”, his fiction about an attack by antimonarchists on Dom Pedro 2º.
The columnist for Sheet and immortal from the Brazilian Academy of Literature had already won the prize in 1996 for his biographies of Garrincha “Estrela Solitária” and ten years later for Carmen Miranda.
Writer Antonio Prata, also a columnist, won the Jabuti Prize for best chronicle book with “Por Quem as Panelas Batem,” a collection of light texts on Brazilian politics that the newspaper has published in recent years.
Gaucho João Gilberto Noll, who died in 2017, posthumously won the short story category for “Natural Education,” adding to a shelf that already had six turtles. He was represented on stage by his daughter and editor Rodrigo Lacerda from Record.
The journalist Fabio Victor, now special reporter for Sheetwon in the biography and reporting category for “Poder Camouflado,” his research on the role of the military in Brazilian governments after redemocratization.
The award for best comic book went to Marcelo D’Salete for “Mukanda Tiodora” the author had already won for “Angola Janga” and was increasingly establishing himself as a reference in national comics.
Lilia Schwarcz and Suzane Lopes won in the youth book category for “Oculos de Cor”, a book by Companhia das Letrinhas about children’s perception of racism. The best children’s book was “Doçura” by Anna Cunha and Emilia Nuñez.
Fabrício Corsaletti, who had already gone on stage to accept the trophy for his friend Prata, had to come back to be celebrated himself for naming “Ghost Engineer” the best book of poetry.
“Dentro do Nosso Silêncio”, which Karine Asth published with the independent Bestiário, won as a light novel.
The Instituto Moreira Salles’ publication about the photographer Walter Firmo was named best art book. Journalist Matthew Shirts’ book “Climate Emergency” about the climate crisis won the prize in the science category.
Following the fallout from the case, Jabuti decided to withdraw the nomination for “Frankenstein” and released a note saying that there would be a more indepth discussion about whether or not to allow the use of artificial intelligence in future editions.
Of all things, the book “Humanamente Digital”, which deals with exactly this topic, was awarded in the human sciences category. The award for best illustration went to one person artist Fayga Ostrower, responsible for “The Remarkable Story of the Striped Man.”
Political scientist Marcos Nobre was named author of the best social science book of the year for “Limits of Democracy,” his analysis of the years from June 2013 to the Bolsonaro government.
The best translation went to “Finnegan’s Rivolta” by James Joyce, a stunning collaborative work led by Professor Dirce Waltrick do Amarante of the Federal University of Santa Catarina.
In her speech, the President of the Brazilian Book Chamber, Sevani Matos, lamented the decline in the number of readers in the country in recent years and defended the “urgency of investing in public measures to promote reading.” He noted the importance of regulating national literacy policies, a longstanding demand of the sector.
Shortly afterwards, on the same stage, Anita Gea Martinez Stefani, director of the Ministry of Education, assured that President Lula would do so “soon”, for which she received great applause, adding that the government believes in a country of books more than weapons, a Contrast with the first Jabuti ceremony after Jair Bolsonaro’s government.
The ceremony took place on Tuesday evening at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo and the organization often emphasized the creation of a new category specifically for debut authors, with which the curators of the prize express their intention to encourage the entry of new authors into the market. The winner this first year was Paulo Fehlauer for “Extremo Oeste”, published by Cepe Editora.
But the award this year was marked by the uproar caused by the inclusion and later disqualification of an illustration created using artificial intelligence.
The Classic Literature Club’s edition of “Frankenstein” was illustrated by designer Vicente Pessôa using the Midjourney tool, which was listed in the credits, but the judges said they didn’t notice.
The finalists and winners are selected by a team of three judges per category Ilustrada editor Silas Martí competed in the graphic design category selected by a team of curators from the Brazilian Book Chamber, led this year by educator Hubert Alquéres.
Following the fallout from the case, Jabuti decided to withdraw the nomination for “Frankenstein” and released a note saying that there would be a more indepth discussion about whether or not to allow the use of artificial intelligence in future editions.
The Jabuti Prize has existed since 1958 and quickly established itself as the main reference in the annual selection of the highlights of Brazilian literature and editorial production.
The main prize, for which the Book of the Year is selected, is worth R$70,000, less than the R$100,000 awarded in previous years. But now the CBL is taking the winner on a trip to the Frankfurt trade fair, an important market for the sale of international publishing rights. The winners in each specific category will receive R$5,000.
