A small set to take with you

Regardless of whether it’s a winter snowmobile or quad hike, you should always have basic equipment with you in case of problems. To get an idea of what this particular little set should contain, I contacted an expert in the field.

“Fans should always carry a thermal blanket and spare socks in case their feet get wet,” explains Bobby Turgeon, assistant manager of property sales at Adrénaline Sports de L’Ancienne-Lorette. I also recommend always carrying matches and a lighter in a small waterproof plastic bag in case you need to start a fire. You have to combine the two because even if the matches get soaked, the lighter will still work. I would add a spare belt and cable to this in case I need to pull a broken machine. There are HD bumpers that are reinforced to be able to tow another machine. There are different models of fasteners. »

The expert explained to us that it is good to have a gasoline stabilizer or, more popularly, Kleen Flo. “I suggest not using it in advance as a preventative measure, as many people do, but rather using it when there is a problem with the gasoline in the vehicle.” »

You can also think about bringing a small booster kit, especially for quads.

“It can certainly be very useful for restarting a vehicle with a power outage, especially in winter, as starting using the vehicle’s battery alone can be impossible. I also advise quad enthusiasts to have bits with them to repair a puncture. »

Personally, I would add to the expert’s advice to always inform someone about the planned trip and provide an approximate time of arrival. If you have to do research, it will be easier.

You must also have a means of communication within your reach. There are cell phones that have reception when you are near towns and villages. However, if you decide to travel to a remote area, a satellite phone would be very useful. Today it is possible to rent such a device for a week or two. If you divide the rental price among the hiking members, it’s not very expensive. If necessary, it can make a difference. I have experienced it personally.
