Teenager dies in pursuit in France

A 17-year-old boy died in an accident during a police chase in France. The driver of the scooter, also 17 years old, was treated in hospital on Saturday for serious injuries, the Public Prosecutor's Office said. The scooter driver ran a red light on Friday night in the town of Neuilly-sur-Marne, east of Paris. The police then wanted to detain him for a check.

But the driver didn't stop. He then lost control of the scooter and crashed into a car waiting at a traffic light. The two teenagers were trapped under the car.

According to the Public Ministry, proceedings were initiated for disrespecting police instructions. The police control authority responsible for internal investigations (IGPN) also initiated investigations.

Several young people have died in police chases in France in recent months. In early October, a 23-year-old scooter driver had an accident while being pursued by police near Lyon. Two months earlier, two young scooter drivers died in a collision with a car in Limoges while trying to evade a police checkpoint.

In June, the death of 17-year-old Nahel, shot by a police officer during a blitz in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, triggered a wave of protests against police violence and racism in France.
