According to the government, at least twelve people died when a mine collapsed in Venezuela. The accident occurred in San José de Wadamapa, in the state of Bolívar, said Saturday the deputy minister of Civil Protection, Carlos Pérez Ampueda. The Ikabarú indigenous community lives in the region.

According to local media and the NGO Provea, the mine collapsed in the middle of the week. According to Provea, residents reported up to 18 deaths.

The state of Bolívar is rich in natural resources, which are also exploited in illegal mines. According to the NGO Provea, children and women in the region also work in mining without protective equipment and in unsafe conditions.
