Several international humanitarian organizations today criticized the UN Security Council's inability to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“We are dismayed that this panel has not approved a solution to this issue,” the groups said in a joint statement released here.
If approved, they noted, it would have provided much-needed respite to civilians in the area who are under constant Israeli bombardment.
This is a missed opportunity to stop the violence, says the message, which was signed by CARE International, Save of Children, Oxfam and the Norwegian Refugee Council, among others.
“We have been in crisis and total siege of Gaza, currently the deadliest place for civilians in the world, for two months. “No place is safe,” they emphasized.
In this sense, they denounced the inability of humanitarian workers to operate effectively and safely due to Israeli bombings and attacks on the entire coastal enclave.
The supply of inbound assistance is severely limited and does not represent even a fraction of the need, they noted.
“People have no access to food and water, the health system has collapsed and attacks on hospitals have left a large part of Gaza's population without access to any treatment,” they complained.
It is unjustifiable for Security Council members to veto a resolution calling for an end to the fighting when the humanitarian arguments for a ceasefire are so clear, they criticized, referring to the US, which rejected the project yesterday .
