247 Francesca Albanese, United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, accused Israel of promoting “ethnic cleansing” in the Gaza Strip in a recent interview with the newspaper O Globo. According to Albanese, the plan of the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to relocate Palestinians to Egypt. This report comes amid a protracted conflict with Hamas that has resulted in more than 17,000 deaths and the displacement of 80% of Gaza's population, according to a report by Sputnik Agency.

In the interview, Albanese described the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) crackdown as intensified and stressed that not even hospitals were spared from the bombings. She also criticized the UN's response to the conflict, calling it an “epic failure.” Regarding Israel's justification for bombing densely populated areas due to Hamas's presence, Albanese argued that the Israeli government itself has military facilities near civilian areas.

Albanese emphasized the continuity of the forced relocation of the Palestinian population since the founding of the State of Israel in 1947. She asked why these people could not return to their homes in the north instead of being forced to move to the Rafah border. The rapporteur also mentioned the inability of the United Nations to pressure Israel to moderate its use of selfdefense, and stressed that while Israel has the right to protect itself, it must not wage war against the civilian population of Gaza.

As the United Nations celebrated the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the resolution establishing a Palestinian state, it reiterated the need for the international community to take action to achieve such a state. Tatiana Valovaya, Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, stressed the urgency of a twostate solution. Tensions in the region have escalated since October 7, when Hamas launched a major attack against Israel, intensifying the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The UN plan also calls for international control of Jerusalem and the formation of a Palestinian state including the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Israel, in turn, advocates demilitarization of the region to ensure its security.
