Girona, who remain unbeaten away from home this LaLiga season, top the table with 41 points from 16 games, overtaking Real Madrid on 39 points after Carlo Ancelotti's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis on Saturday.
Barcelona, whose only defeat this season came against Madrid at the end of October, is in fourth place with 34 points, level with third-place Atletico Madrid, who still have a game in hand.
“Girona has great merit in what they do. They are in the lead, even more so today. They have seven points more than us and that is well deserved,” said Xavi.
