The Willy Wonka origin story – based on Roald Dahl's 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – was released in the UK on Friday and will hit cinemas in the US on December 15.

Variety previously reported that Chalamet earned a whopping $9 million to play the film's title character.

It was also announced that the Dune star beat out Tom Holland, Donald Glover, Ezra Miller and Ryan Gosling for the role.

The eccentric genius who delighted in punishing naughty children was memorably created by Gene Wilder in Mel Stuart's beloved 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The casting of Hugh Grant as Oompa Loompa in the film was met with controversy after the decision was criticized by an actor with dwarfism, who argued that the role should have been offered to an actor with the condition due to a lack of roles for dwarfs.

The Oompa-Loompas – little workers in the factory that Wonka imported from Loompaland – were played by actors with dwarfism in two previous films based on Roald Dahl's legendary children's book.

Wonka is directed by Paul King, who is also behind the successful Paddington films.

Other members of the Wonka cast included: Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson and Olivia Colman.
