ON VIDEO | Thousands of dead fish mysteriously wash up on a Japanese beach

Thousands of fish have washed up on a beach in Hakodate in northern Japan for reasons that are still unclear.

According to Sky News, thousands of marine animals covered the beach for more than 1.5 kilometers.

Drone footage obtained by Portal shows how numerous the fish are, completely obscuring the sand.

Although no official cause has been determined, Takashi Fujioka, a researcher at the Hakodate Fisheries Research Institute, believes the fish may have died from exhaustion while possibly being preyed upon by larger fish.

Then they would have had too little oxygen to survive and would have traveled in large groups.

Mr Fujioka added in an interview with Sky News that the decomposition of dead fish could reduce oxygen levels in this part of the ocean and affect neighboring ecosystems.
