“According to initial information, Russia launched a missile attack on the Kiev region at around 4:00 a.m. (2:00 a.m. in Lisbon), the Ukrainian Air Force said on the social network Telegram.
“In total, the air defense destroyed eight air targets flying towards the capital on a ballistic trajectory,” he continued.
The Kiev military administration said rocket fragments fell in the Darnytskyi district southeast of the capital.
Four residents were treated by emergency services, including one with injuries from shrapnel, he added on the same social network.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that “a fragment of a rocket damaged a building under construction in the Darnytskyi district” and caused a fire that was quickly extinguished, while another piece of shrapnel fell on a lawn.
Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of preparing a campaign of systematic attacks on the country's energy infrastructure in the middle of winter, as happened last year.
In the winter of 2022, these attacks left millions of people without power for an extended period in the middle of a cold snap.
Since then, Kiev has bolstered its air defense systems with Western weapons but said it needed more to protect vulnerable regions.
