This was announced by Undersecretary of State for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Joel Hernández García at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the State Department reported in a statement today.
The text indicates that this support will be coordinated with the local authorities of the state of Guerrero to provide immediate assistance to girls, boys and young people in the communities affected by Hurricane Otis.
He points out that this fund is an initiative to implement projects to promote climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean and was presented just two days ago at COP28 by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and Mexico, and it's already running.
The speakers at the presentation agreed that Latin America and the Caribbean is the second most affected region by disasters related to meteorological, hydrological, climatological and geophysical natural phenomena.
In this sense, they emphasized the need to strengthen this fund with the support of the international community.
The Foreign Ministry statement said the event was supported by the Development Bank for Latin America and the Caribbean, with which several Celac countries recently signed a joint declaration of support for the fund's consolidation.
Also in the chair was the Minister of Sustainable Development of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Carlos James; the Vice Minister for Strategic Management of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica, Carlos Isaac Pérez.
In addition, the Director of Climate Change of the Secretary of State for Natural Resources of Honduras, Wendy Rodríguez, and the Director of Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Constanza Bejarano.
