Colombia wants to host the conference on biodiversity in 2024

The head of this department, Susana Muhamad, said that the application represents a great opportunity for the country, which, she noted, is considered to be the area with the highest biodiversity per hectare in the world.

He noted that the committee's response is now being awaited regarding which country will host the meeting, the celebration of which in Latin America would send a message to the world regarding climate action and the protection of life, he said.

Regarding the nomination, Acting Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity David Cooper asserted that Colombia is home to enormous biodiversity and described the country as an inspiring example of commitment to indigenous peoples and local communities.

According to the ministerial note, the Biodiversity Conference brings together more than 190 countries, observer organizations, youth groups, civil society and academies that will assess the protection and restoration of nature against 23 targets for 2030 and four targets by 2050.

Its sessions discuss issues related to biodiversity loss, ecosystem restoration, equitable distribution of benefits, and protection of indigenous peoples' rights.

Canada was the last country to host the biodiversity summit in December 2022, along with China, which chaired the meeting.

According to the statement, Colombia is the third largest country in the world with more than 67,000 registered animal and plant species.
