In the sci-fi series' third and final 60th anniversary special, David Tennant briefly returned to the role as he transformed into 31-year-old Sex Education star Ncuti.
However, all was not as it seemed, as a major twist resulted in both versions of the Doctor remaining on screen, marking a major departure from the tradition of the long-running series.
The highly anticipated episode drew an average of about 4.5 million viewers, with a peak of just over 6 million, according to new ratings.
In comparison, Jodie Whittaker's last ever episode, when she bowed out of the role, only averaged 3.6 million viewers, with a peak of 4 million.
Ncuti's debut came when the “scary” recurring villain The Toymaker, played by Neil Patrick Harris, shot David's doctor through the chest, forcing him to regenerate.
The Toymaker had driven the people of Earth mad before challenging the Doctor to a deadly game that put the planet at risk and forced the Time Lord to accept the attempt to save the Earth.
As he shot the Doctor, the Toymaker said, “I played one game with the first Doctor, the second with this Doctor, so your rules say I have to play the third game with the next Doctor!”
His companions Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and the returning Melanie Bush (Bonnie Langford) rushed to help him recover, and fans expected this to be the end of David's character.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies, 60, appeared in good spirits as he posed at the event, wearing a navy jacket and black trousers

Melanie reassured him: “You will be someone else, no matter who, because every single one of you is amazing!”
While David tearfully said, “It's time, here we go again! Alonzee,” as he expected to be replaced, but a major twist saw his character remain alongside his new incarnation.
As he stayed after regeneration, he asked Donna and Melanie, “Could you pull?” This time it feels different,” and as they pulled on his arms, Ncuti shot out of him and the two Time Lords stood in a massive spin next to each other.
In his highly anticipated debut, Ncuti's Doctor screamed, “No way!” When he saw David, he moved away from the tradition that usually sees one Doctor replacing another during regeneration.
David said, “You are me,” while Ncuti replied, “No, I am me.” I think I'm really, really me! Oh-ho-ho, I'm all me!'
When asked what happened, Ncuti's doctor said: “Bi-generation, I have bi-generation.” There is no such thing, bi-generation is supposed to be a myth, but-!'
The pair of doctors then used their talents to take on the Toymaker together and incredibly managed to beat him with his own abilities, banishing the villain from existence forever.
David's doctor said, “Best of three, and my prize, Toymaker, is to banish you from existence forever!”

“No, you can’t. But I – don’t ask fair,” said the toymaker, before issuing the ominous warning: “My legions are coming.”
However, it appears that this is not the end, as a mysterious hand was seen picking up the Toymaker's abandoned gold tooth – after the Toymaker told the Doctor how he defeated the villain, the Master, and trapped him in the tooth .
After banishing the Toymaker from the world, both David and Ncuti's versions of the character remained on screen and returned to the TARDIS with Donna.
David asked Ncuti, “How's this going to work, you and me?” as the big twist resulted in two Doctors remaining after a regeneration for the first time ever.
Ncuti told him: “You're skinny as a pin darling, you're just living on the fumes,” before urging him to slow down and “stop” instead of running and traveling in the TARDIS.
Ncuti then paid tribute to a number of former companions, including the late Elisabeth Sladen, who portrayed Sarah Jane Smith and sadly passed away in 2011.
Neil Patrick Harris also drove fans crazy when he starred as the scary villain, the Toymaker, driving the people of Earth crazy and challenging the Doctor to a game with high stakes

“Sarah Jane is gone, can you believe that for a second?” Ncuti said as they paid loving tribute to the legendary actress.
Ncuti then told David's doctor to try and live a life of his own, to which David said: “I never let go of the TARDIS, never, that would hurt.”
In another major twist, Ncuti managed to transform the one TARDIS into two separate time machines as a “reward” for winning the game against The Toymaker, according to his rules that prioritize games over logic.
The episode ended with Ncuti setting off on further time travel adventures in the TARDIS while David remained on Earth with Donna and her family, providing a sweet happy ending for David's character after he briefly returned to the role.
Neil portrayed the dastardly villain “The Toymaker”, who last appeared in the drama in 1966, when he was portrayed by Michael Gough in the four-part arc of “The Celestial Toymaker”.
