journal / journal +: “Armenia the great exodus” and “Grandfather's diary ancient and …

On December 13th from 10:30 pm on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) – After the expulsion of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh from their homeland, their fate disappeared from the field of international attention. “WELTjournal” – presented by Patricia Pawlicki – will show the report “Armenia – the Great Exodus” on ORF 2 on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at 10:30 pm. The documentary “Grandfather’s Diary – Old and New Wars” continues on “WELTjournal +” at 11:05 pm.

WELTjournal: “Armenia – the great exodus”

More than 100,000 Armenians had to flee Azerbaijani troops in just a few days at the end of September. For Azerbaijan, the enclave, predominantly inhabited by Armenians, is a breakaway province. “WELTjournal” reporter Patrick A. Hafner is looking for clues – both in Armenia and Azerbaijan. Both sides are driven by bitter hatred and revanchism. While Armenians displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh must build a new life elsewhere, Azerbaijanis are now repopulating the historically contested Caucasus province. Because when the Soviet Union dissolved, it was Azerbaijanis who were expelled from Nagorno-Karabakh. They have not forgotten this to this day and, as they say, they also consider themselves right to retake their homeland.

WELTjournal +: “Grandfather’s diary – old and new wars”

80 years after his grandfather's death, Armenian filmmaker Hakob Melkonyan comes across an extraordinary document: the war diary of his grandfather, who died in Crimea during the Second World War. One description in it is particularly close to the grandson: for the grandfather, all his comrades in the Soviet Army were brothers. Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Georgians, Ukrainians and Russians fought together, side by side, against the Germans. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, these ancient sister nations have fought each other as enemies in endless and grueling wars. “WELTjournal+” shows grandson Hakob's journey following in his grandfather's footsteps through a once great empire that Russian President Putin would like to revive.
