Italy's migration agreement with Albania is suspended news

The Albanian Constitutional Court announced that the parliamentary process scheduled for today to approve the agreement between Italy and Albania on the establishment of two migrant centers on Albanian soil will be suspended. The deal violated the constitution and international agreements, said the court, which was appealed by the Albanian Democratic Party and 28 deputies who supported former prime minister Sali Berisha.

The president of the Court, Holta Zacaj, stated, according to the Italian news agency ANSA, that “the panel of judges that met today considered that the complaints presented meet the necessary criteria and decided to consider them in a plenary session”.

This means that parliamentary proceedings are automatically suspended until the court makes a decision. The court must decide by March 6 at the latest.

Italian law in the fields in Albania

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the agreement signed with Albania this week. “The agreement with Tirana is destined to become an important instrument in the fight against human traffickers.” Meloni also emphasized that the agreement must fully comply with EU law. The two camps in Albania would be under Italian jurisdiction and operated by Italian personnel.
