A 20yearold woman underwent emergency surgery in Taiwan to remove more than 300 stones from one of her kidneys. According to a statement from Chi Mei Hospital, where she was treated, the woman went to the emergency room with fever and hip pain.

According to reports, the woman did not drink water and regularly resorted to tea and sugary drinks. Doctors believe she was chronically dehydrated, a major factor in the formation of kidney stones.

The largest stones among the hundreds removed from the young woman's body were about 2 cm in diameter. Only the left kidney was affected.

Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy was performed, a procedure considered minimally invasive in which the stones are removed through a small incision in the back. The patient was discharged a few days after the procedure.

Stones are hard masses that form in the urinary tract and can cause severe pain, bleeding, infection, and a blockage in the flow of urine. Stones often occur in people whose diets are very high in animal protein, who have close relatives who have this disease, or who do not drink enough water.
