In the film, Ortega plays a promising high school student named Cairo who initially forms a friendly bond with her English teacher Jonathan Miller (Freeman). However, when he rejects her advances, the tension rises and Cairo turns the tables on her professor.
News of Ortega's new project came weeks after multiple media outlets confirmed her exit from the Scream franchise. Ortega has played the role of Tara Carpenter since the fifth film, which hit theaters in 2022. However, due to her filming schedule for the second season of the Netflix series “Wedwig,” Ortega dropped out before the seventh part.

The official synopsis reads: “A talented young writer embarks on a creative odyssey when their teacher assigns them a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web.” As boundaries blur and their lives intertwine, Professor and protégé grapple with their darkest selves while attempting to maintain their individual sense of purpose and the things they care about most.”

In the sneak peek, released in December 2023, Ortega's character plays a creative writing student who begins to show interest in her teacher. Meanwhile, Freeman's character offers his student special treatment, which he later tries to take back when he realizes how unprofessional it is.
Cairo doesn't take rejection well and seems to claim that her teacher took advantage of her.
