Turkey says only the United States is obstructing a ceasefire in Gaza

Istanbul, December 14 (EFE). – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said this Thursday that the United States is the only obstacle preventing a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

“At the moment, only the United States is preventing us from moving from the Gaza massacres to a ceasefire,” Fidan said at a news conference in Baku, broadcast live by Turkey's Anadolu news agency.

With these statements, the head of Turkish diplomacy alluded to the vetoes with which Washington normally blocks resolutions in the UN Security Council that are unfavorable to Israel, such as the one passed last Friday.

After expressing his hope that the US government “will not continue to obstruct these decisions,” he referred to growing voices around the world calling for an end to the Israeli military offensive.

In this sense, he recalled that the number of countries that voted in the United Nations Assembly for a (non-binding) resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire increased from 122 at the end of October to 153 last Tuesday.

“We have seen that countries that previously abstained or voted against have now decided to support Palestine. This shows the will of the international community to put an end to repression,” the minister said after a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov.

Fidan announced that he would travel to Norway tomorrow as a representative of the so-called Group of Seven, formed at the extraordinary summit of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on November 11, to call for a ceasefire in Gaza to advertise .

In addition to Turkey, the group also includes Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and Nigeria as well as Palestine.

With this mission, Fidan traveled to Washington last Friday and then traveled on to Canada.

In Oslo, Fidan will meet with representatives from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. EFE
