The agreement is divided into two parts. An amount of almost 25 million was made available over five years to maintain the “management and support of public spaces” for festivals and other events in the Quartier des spectacles. Another 27 million and dust must be spent on the “revival and programming” of this urban space.

Ericka Alneus, responsible for culture and heritage on the City of Montreal's Executive Committee, described the Quartier des spectacles as “the cultural heart that makes our city center vibrate.” In its 20 years of existence, the Quartier des spectacles partnership has “played an invaluable role in the cultural development of our city,” she added.

The announcement, which comes at the start of the holidays, also comes with an invitation from the City of Montreal to visit downtown in the middle of winter to take advantage of the activities on offer, including the ice rink on the quiet Esplanade and the 14th edition of Luminothérapie. Earlier Thursday, another announcement was made reminding residents that winter activities will be available in all counties.
