Since early December, around 1,200 tons of sardines and mackerel have been found on the sea surface off the fishing port of Hakodate, Hokkaido, forming a silver blanket that stretches for more than a kilometer. The Guardian reports on this and emphasizes that the Japanese authorities are trying to find out the reasons.
“The cause is currently unknown,” Mikine Fujiwara, a local fisheries official, told the newspaper: “We plan to take samples of the seawater on site and examine them to find out the cause.”
“I have never seen anything like this before,” a fisherman who has worked in the area for 25 years told the Mainichi Shimbun.
