General Motors is laying off 1,314 workers at manufacturing plants in Michigan, months after reaching a new labor contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW).
The announcement was made Thursday (Dec. 14) and Local 4 was told 945 people will be employed at the automaker's Orion Assembly Subsystems Plant in Orion Township.
Officials say the Orion assembly plant will be converted in late 2025 to produce battery-electric trucks, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. The final production date is scheduled for the week of December 18th.
We have also received information that the layoffs will affect 369 employees at Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping and Lansing Regional Stamping.
Officials say the Lansing Grand River Assembly has informed employees that the plant will adjust staffing levels due to the end of Camaro production. The assembly plant will continue to produce the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5.
GM's announcement follows the other layoff announcement just a few weeks ago Stellantisaffecting over 1,000 Michigan residents.
GM says it will offer affected employees jobs elsewhere in the company.
“GM’s firing of workers is an outrageous move motivated by corporate greed. These layoffs were announced not only in the middle of the holiday season, but also after GM received hundreds of millions of dollars in federal tax incentives and after the ratification of a historic deal for better wages and benefits. To then turn around and fire workers is an unacceptable betrayal. I call on GM to reverse course and prioritize the main driver of its business: workers.”
