Yemen's Houthi rebels fired on a ship in the Red Sea on Friday, an American official said, after another similar attack in that strategic maritime zone.

“We know that 'something' that came from a Houthicontrolled area in Yemen hit a ship, which was damaged and a fire was reported,” an American military official told AFP.

According to the Ambrey secret service, it is a cardboard freighter from Liberia that belongs to the German Hapag Lloyd AG.

“There was an attack on one of our boats,” a company spokesman confirmed to AFP. He said the ship was traveling from the Greek port of Piraeus to Singapore.

The Iranaligned Houthi rebels had warned in response to the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip that they would attack any ship sailing off the coast of Yemen with ties to Israel.

On Thursday they claimed to have carried out a “military operation using a drone” against a cargo ship, the Maersk Gibraltar, which was on its way to Israel.

However, an American official said the device malfunctioned and fell into the water.
