A 25-year-old driver who allegedly caused the death of a couple and seriously injured a young boy in the back of the vehicle is said to have performed dangerous maneuvers to avoid missing her appointment at a beauty salon, the court heard on Wednesday.
“Essentially it was his fault that the collision occurred,” Crown prosecutor Michael Greenhalgh said at Hull Crown Court in England, according to Hull DailyMail.
Laila Barnard-Wigley was portrayed as a “hurry” driver who didn't want to miss her appointment at a beauty salon where she planned to sell products when she allegedly caused a fiery collision on the road in May 2021.
Because after attempting to overtake “five or six times”, the young woman suddenly crossed the road before colliding head-on with an oncoming vehicle in “risky” weather conditions, resulting in the death of Dean Yarrow, 33 Faye Wardle, 32, according to British media.
The couple died at the scene with “catastrophic injuries,” while a child sitting in the back of the vehicle was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
But according to text messages she had recently exchanged with a friend who organized the sale, the defendant had assured her that she could be there by 3:30 p.m., while the accident occurred at around 3:28 p.m.
“There [couronne] is of the opinion that the defendant was in a hurry to arrive,” the prosecutor continued.
For her part, Laila Barnard-Wigley denied causing the couple's death and the little boy's injuries through dangerous, careless or reckless driving.
According to Hull DailyMail, his trial is expected to last seven days.
