LOS ANGELES (KABC) — When you go to a security checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport, you won't have to whip out your ID, depending on which terminal you're departing from. Instead, all you need is your California DMV Wallet, a digital app introduced by the state.
TSA officers at LAX are encouraging people with California driver's licenses to download the app, which allows you to scan a unique QR code, eliminating the need to take out your driver's license and scan it.
“Those who have a driver’s license issued by the state of California have the option to download a mobile driver’s license and use it for identity verification here at the TSA security checkpoint,” said Lorie Dankers, a spokeswoman for TSA California.
When you arrive at the security checkpoint line, scan the QR code on your digital wallet. Your photo will then be taken. The system ensures that the photo matches your ID photo.
“If there's no match, they can do a manual review and then still do what they've always done in the past,” said Ian Law of Los Angeles World Airports.
“Once you meet that TSA officer, you will literally go through the entire security screening process in probably less than a minute,” Dankers said.
Officers have been trained to direct passengers to participating lanes as they can be difficult to locate on busy travel days. This is initially only possible at Terminals 3 and 7.
According to TSA officials, this will help save time during the holiday rush.
“TSA at LAX anticipates that we will screen 1.9 million people through the checkpoints here at LAX by January 2nd,” Dankers said.
